Luckily, Google Trends now makes it possible to understand exactly what’s popular by showing you what the most popular searches are and exactly when they peak. This little tool could be the key to improving your SEO.

Google Trends is a great little SEO not-so-secret weapon to have. It’s really simple to use, so there’s really no excuse not to be taking advantage of all of its fantastic features. More than anything, Google Trends allows you to stay on top of what’s currently, well, trending.

You can see what’s most popular organized by location, category, event and date, or you can use the explore feature to search your own topics and track their activity.

 

 

How to Use It

 

The basics of Google Trends are actually pretty simple. Play around with it! All you have to do to get started is visit www.google.com/trends and type in whatever you want to research. Search yourself, your favorite TV shows, Leo DiCaprio at the Oscars, whatever tickles your fancy. Scroll through the trending stories for a quick look into what’s trending worldwide, but most of your insight will come from narrowing your searches.

 

Start with something a little on the broad side. Take the search for “chocolate,” for example. First, you’ll see the popularity of the search over a timeline outlining when it was the most popular.

If you’d like, you can also cross-reference your searches by adding another term and comparing the two.

Then (and here’s where it gets really exciting), Google Trends will give you all of the related searches you can use to improve your SEO.

This is the feature that will show you what people are searching for most within your area of interest. Track these searches as well to get on top of the most recent trends.
