6 Things You Need to Know About Facebook Ads

December 27, 2023
With over one billion people currently using Facebook, it’s become an immensely popular place to advertise (and rightfully so). Facebook ads can be quite affective at reaching a desired audience, but it turns out they are far more complex than they may appear. As a result, we’ve created a crash course with all the essentials of Facebook ads to help you navigate this big blue advertising ground.

Not all ads are the same.

Facebook’s most popular ad formats are the right-hand sidebar and the News Feed ads. Ads in the right-hand column are typically less likely to generate leads, but nonetheless are still helpful if done correctly. In order for these ads to be helpful to you, they need to be visual and relevant with a good call-to-action. News Feed ads have to be all the same things, the only difference being that they tend to be more successful, and as a result, more expensive.

You can choose your audience.

When creating an ad, Facebook allows you to choose the types of people you want to advertise to based on age, location, interests, gender and even the devices they most frequently use Facebook on. This is a key piece of information because it means you need to know which demographics you’re targeting going in. Make sure you’ve done the research ahead of time to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck.

You can reach existing customers.

If you have the phone numbers and emails of existing customers, you can run ads directly to those people. You can even exclude them from old ads and target new ones at them.

You get what you pay for.

Inevitably, you aren’t the only one advertising on Facebook, so what you’re actually doing is participating in an auction for the amount of time your ad spends on someone’s page. Essentially, you set your budget and run time of your ad beforehand, and Facebook automatically bids for you to get your ads presented (you also have the option of bidding yourself). This is so that Facebook users aren’t constantly bombarded with ads. Make sure you aren’t overpaying for ads, but don’t pay so little that your ads don’t actually do you any good.

You can use posts as ads.

Boosted posts are posts that were originally created by you on your page but were then sponsored with advertising funds. This allows you to make your ads longer and more detailed and even lets you include links in the ad. The downside to this method is that you have less control over the post and who sees it, but you are given more leeway when it comes to content.

Know the trends.

Facebook favors different types of ads based on what people are most receptive to. As of last January, Facebook reported prioritizing video ads over other types of visual advertising. This was likely due to the growing popularity of short videos overall (a reported 50% of people who visit Facebook watch at least one video per day), so knowing which forms of advertising are the most popular at the moment will go a long way in your Facebook marketing strategies.
